Additionally, we’ve included a brief explanation below on how to play Kalooki 51.
How to Play Kalooki 51
Kalooki 51 is played with 106 cards – two standard decks of 52 cards and, added to these 104 cards, two jokers. The jokers are wild cards, and their value in melds is the same value as the card that they represent and virtually become that card. This is true for melds only. When counted at the end of the game as penalty points they have the subtractive value of 25.
In this game aces in melds have the value of 1 or 11, and this depends on how the ace is used.
The play begins with each player receiving 13 cards. The remaining cards make up the stack from which the top card is turned over to face up. That will be the first card in the discard pile. If these cards run out, they are reshuffled to form a new stock , leaving the last discard as the first card of the new discard pile.
In Kalooki 51, there is an additional move called the middle move where the player may opt to lay down his melds in the melding area. This first meld, as the name of the game suggests, must add up to a value of 51. Once the initial 51 point meld requirement is met, the requirement has been met for that player only. The other players must also meet the requirement.
As the game proceeds, players may choose as their middle move in turn not only to lay out their own melds but to build on the melds in the melding area of the table. There are two ways to end the game as listed below. In both of the ways, the winning player for each round is the one who discards his last card.
Kalooki 51 End of Round:
Going Out: The player has layed out his melds during the game and discards his last card. Each player left receives penalty points for the value of all of the cards in their hand.
Going Kalooki: The player lays down all of his melds without builders in one move and discards his last card. The penalties here for the other players increases in that an additional 25 points is subtracted for each including the value of all of the cards in their hands.
Kalooki 51 Scoring
Each round the scoring is calculated until the overall match comes to an end. When the match is complete the pool prize is divided with the winning player receiving at least 75% of the prize, and the additional 25% is divided among the remaining players who have less than 50 penalty points. If a player has over 50 penalty points, his share of the remaining 25% goes to the winner.
