How To Play Rummy – A Beginners Guide
Rummy is a simple game that many people already have played, and even the variations are easy to learn. Some may know the meaning of the term “meld”, but for those who don’t, “meld” is a term which means that the cards match. Examples of a meld are three or four cards of the same value in different suits, such as 10H, 10D, 10S, and 10C. This is the same as saying ” Four of a kind” in poker terms. Another example of a meld might be a run where cards are in exact sequence, such as 6H, 7H, 8H, etc. The object of rummy is to form melds and to discard all of your cards first, before the other players.
There are many different variations of Rummy, to learn more read our page: Rummy Variations.
Whatever the variation, play is similar. Players take turns around the table and each in turn draws a card and discards one. The drawn card may be taken from the deck or from the top of the face-up discard pile. The discard ends that players turn, so in many games – Gin would be an exception, as seen later – the player will form and lay down melds, before discarding. Even if the player does not end the game by discarding the last of his cards, he will want to have as few cards left as possible. This is because points are taken away from him based on the values of the cards left in his hand at the end of that part of the game – when someone discards their last card.
