How to Play Gin Rummy

Gin Rummy is played with a standard deck of 52 cards without jokers. Players section their hands into groups of matching cards called “melds” which are sets of the same values (such as three 9’s or four J’s) or straight runs (such as 2, 3, 4) of the same suit. In Gin Rummy, players do not lay down their melds until their final discard at which time they gin out, leaving other players stuck with “deadwood” cards in their hands. Deadwood, simply put, are cards that do not meld. After a player gins out, these cards are deducted as penalty points from a player’s score.

There are three ways that a round ends:

1. Gin – A player has created valid melds with all the cards in his hand and discards his last card into the knock area of the table.

2. Knock – A player has formed enough melds in his hand to risk that he has the best hand, and the deadwood cards in his hand do not add up to more than ten.

3. Undercut – After a player knocks, the other players can add cards to the knocker’s melds. When an opponent ends up with a lower deadwood count than the knocker, that player wins by “undercut”. The original knocker is penalized 35 points in addition to the deadwood value of the cards he had held.

Ace: one point

Number Cards: The face value of the card

Face Cards: These are worth 10 points.
